The status of Myanmar’s participation in Free Trade Agreements (FTA) and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) was presented to Members of Parliament led by Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations on 13-9-2019 at Learning Centre Room, Hluttaw Compound. The meeting was attended by 63 persons in total including the Members of Parliament and the officials from concerned Ministries who are currently negotiating in RCEP.
During the meeting, U Aung Naing Oo, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations, explained the background information about Free Trade Areas and World Trade Organization, advantages and disadvantages of FTA, trade and investment between ASEAN and Myanmar and Myanmar’s participation in FTA.
U Than Aung Kyaw, Director General of Foreign Economic Relations Department, explained about ASEAN Free Trade Agreement, trade and investment between ASEAN and plus one FTA, two way trade between Myanmar and its trading partners within 5 years from 2015-2019, status of RCEP negotiation and the benefits and opportunities of Myanmar from RCEP negotiation.
At the end of the presentations, there was a Q & A session asked by Members of Parliament regarding to FTA and RCEP and answered by Permanent Secretary and Director General. The event was adjourned at 15:30.
